Olympic World Records - Part 5

The 29th Summer Olympics have now ended in Beijing, China and the torch has been passed to London, United Kingdom who will host the next summer games in 2012. Over a wonderful two weeks of sport over 40 new world records were set by athletes from across the globe.

Michael Phelps (USA) broke 8 world records in the pool on his way to 8 gold medals which is the most gold medals won at a single Olympic games and taking his overall gold medals tally to 14 the most gold medals won at the Olympics.

On the track Usain Bolt (Jamaica) completed an amazing sprint hat-trick winning gold medals in the 100 metres, 200 metres and 4 x 100 metres relay while setting a new world record in all three of these events.

The USA team finished second in this year’s medals table behind hosts China but still hold the Guinness World Record for the most gold medals won at the Summer Olympics by a country with a total of 933 gold medals.
