GWR spotlight on Turkey

National days keep coming thick and fast and on this day in 1923, Turkey was declared a republic, with Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as its first president. As ever on such an occasion, GWR honours the Islamic democracy with a look at some of its records and native holders.

The quickest goal in a World Cup finals match, as recognised by FIFA, is 11 seconds, scored by Hakan Sukur of Turkey against Korea Republic at Daegu, Korea on 29 June 2002.

Largest cardboard box pyramid
The largest cardboard box pyramid consisted of 17,953 empty Calgonit 5in1 Tablet detergent boxes that were stacked into 35 layers, measuring 6.13 m (20 ft 1.4 in) tall. It was built by ten staff in an event organised by Reckitt Benckiser at the Carrefour store in Istanbul, Turkey, on 8 December 2006.

Largest flag flown while skydiving (parachute jump)
Gazali Peltek (Turkey) flew a Turkish flag measuring 531.2 m² (5,717.9 ft²) whilst parachuting over the military base in Kayseri, Turkey, on 16 December 2005.

Largest spray painted picture
The largest spray painted picture measured 760.28 m² (8183.58 ft²) and was made for Coca-Cola Ýcecek by 580 students from nine universities around Turkey. It was completed at Hezarfen Airport, Istanbul, Turkey on 16 August 2004.
