Largest stand up in one week
From 17 to 19 of October 2008, in an unprecedented mobilization, more than one percent of the world’s population is expected to “Stand Up and Take Action” to demand that their leaders end poverty and meet and exceed the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Participants in this powerful and unique mobilization will be attempting to once again shatter the existing Guinness World Record for the largest stand up in one week. This record was first set in 2006, by the United Nations Millennium Campaign in partnership with the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP), when more than 23 million people took part.
Last year, that record was beaten when more than 43 million people around the world Stood Up.
The UN Millennium Campaign and GCAP are confident that this year’s mobilization will break all records with a massive 67 million people expected to take part.
In the year 2000, 189 world leaders signed the Millennium Declaration and agreed to do everything in their power to end the suffering of billions of people who live in extreme poverty and struggle to survive with less than US$1 (£0.57) a day. These leaders agreed to do this by achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. Eight Goals which provide a framework for ending extreme poverty and its root causes.
Across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Oceania, the global movement in support of the achievement of the Millennium Goals continues to grow.
