Skis

On Saturday 13 September 2008, the town of Orebro in the middle of Sweden was bustling with anticipation as nearly 300 tonnes (272,155 kg) of snow were laid out on the main street which was closed for traffic.

What everyone was awaiting for was the Guinness World Record attempt by Danske Bank! The record in question was for the longest pair of skis which stood at 104.8 meters (343 ft 9 in) at the time. The stage was set and the skis were pulled out onto the snow by a tractor, stretching from one end of the town’s centre to the other.

Gunde Svan, a multiple gold medallist in the Winter Olympics, got on stage and cheered on over 1,000 employees of Danske Bank as they took their places on the skis. After a bit of a warm-up they were ready to prove that the skis were ‘usable’ and after skiing 15 metres (49 ft 2 in) along the snow, the record was theirs!

The skis measured 534 metres (1,751 ft 11 in) and a very proud MD, Leif Norburg, received the Guinness World Records certificate on stage by Guinness World Records adjudicator, Denise Anlander.
